AUGUSTA, Georgia (WJBF) – The Augusta Boxing Club is a non-profit organization that combines athletics, academics, and counseling.
On Saturday, February 12, the club is hosting its second “Fight of the Hearts” fundraiser.
The event will feature more than 20 boxing matches featuring boxers aged eight and up, with proceeds going to the group’s ‘Experience of a Lifetime’ program. The program uses boxing to get troubled youth off the streets and into a better environment that builds confidence and self-discipline.
“It’s my life. I come here every day. Better to sweat in the gym than bleed on the street,” said George Edwards, who has been attending the Augusta Boxing Club for a year.
“Augusta Boxing Club kept it busy, out of trouble, keep it active…so I’m grateful to Augusta Boxing Club. If you have any boys or girls you want them to stay out of trouble and have a good influence around them, bring them to the Augusta Boxing Club,” said Nekisha Roberts, George’s mother.
In addition to fundraising, the “Fight of the Hearts” event will also help the club give back to another non-profit organization.
“This year, we will be giving back to Project Refresh. It is a non-profit organization that has a mobile shower and goes around the community and lets homeless people take showers. When I saw this organization it touched my heart and I thought it was so amazing,” said manager and head coach Rayonta Whitfield.
The Augusta Boxing Club has been around for over 45 years and plans to continue to be a place that helps others and gives back to the community.
“Instead of being on the streets, you can be here instead of doing bad things. Why not do something yourself,” George said.
“I have been in the boxing club for 29 years now. It was my safe place growing up in my youth and we’re only here for the kids and the community and people know it’s a special place for everyone,” Whitfield said.
The Augusta Boxing Club will hold its grand reopening on Wednesday, February 9 at 5 p.m. to show off its recent improvements.
The Fight of the Hearts fundraiser will take place on Saturday, February 12 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. You can buy tickets at the door.
