‘Completely impossible’: Club chairman makes confession about £64m Liverpool man who is on the verge of blowing up
Benfica chairman Rui Costa has said it was “impossible” to reject Liverpool’s summer offer for Darwin Nunez.
Costa revealed to BTV via A Bola that Liverpool’s offer for the striker was too good to turn down.
“We are talking about one of the highest transfers on the market. We are still emerging from a situation that has caught up with the football market [Covid]. Make a sale of 75 € [£65m]+25M€ [£21.6m] doesn’t have a lot of discussion,” he said.
“The sale of Darwin is more than justified, and there was no condition to keeping him, it was completely impossible, by the values that came into the club and what Darwin was earning.”
Liverpool are waiting for Darwin Nunez to explode
Hopefully Liverpool will ultimately be as happy with the price they paid for Nunez as Benfica are now.
At present, however, it looks like the Uruguayan will be a work in progress at Anfield.
Despite claims that Liverpool are unsure of their new signing, there have been encouraging indicators.
Considering the price the Reds paid, Darwin was still under pressure.
After initial difficulties in pre-season, he responded to the tension brilliantly by scoring four goals against RB Leipzig.
He continued this form until the start of the season, scoring from the bench against Manchester City and Fulham.
After such a good run, Nunez shot himself in the foot against Crystal Palace when he received a reckless red card.
Since then he has caught up as Liverpool struggle to start the season.
Obviously, the 23-year-old is still in his infancy at his new club.
Looking back, his first season at Benfica was very mundane, while his second was explosive. Perhaps we should anticipate a comparable trend on Merseyside.
Darwin still has plenty of time this season to make a joke of that statement. He only appeared in five games.
With some goals in his next games, Nunez’s situation will start to improve considerably.
