Matt Critchley marked his debut by becoming the third player to hit triple figures as Essex racked up the runs on day two of their LV=Insurance County Championship Division One encounter with Kent at Chelmsford.
Critchley hit 132 balls from 179, a shot that included thirteen 4s and two 6s. Earlier, Essex opening pair Nick Brown and Alastair Cook scored 107 and 100 respectively, while another debutant, Adam Rossington contributed 41 and Adam Wheater 37 as the home side posted a strong 514. Visitors ensured that the run-fest continued. They had reached 122/1 at the close. Ben Compton are unbeaten on 47 and Tawanda Muyeye 43* – Sam Cook was responsible for Kent’s only wicket to fall, that of Daniel Bell-Drummond, trapped lbw for 11. Play resumes at 11am on Saturday.
