The Fountain Hills Democratic Club (FHDC) will resume regular monthly meetings at the community center on September 8. To allow attendees to attend the Ballet Under the Stars event later in the evening, the club will meet from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the afternoon, doors open at 5:15 p.m.
CHF Canada will recognize Member Alice Brovan as the first recipient of the Outstanding Democrat Award. She will be honored after a brief history of her journey and her involvement in the community.
Speakers from the club include Arizona Senate candidate Thomas Dugger; School Board candidate Lilian Acker; and Maricopa County District Attorney candidate Julie Gunnigle.
Thomas Dugger, who is running as a Democrat to become a state senator for LD3, is an expert in information technology and finance. If elected state senator, Dugger said he would fight to increase state funding for Arizona schools, which are ranked near the bottom for the entire United States.
Dugger supports the ballot initiative to provide more funding to public schools. The water crisis in this state is also a top priority for him, as is accountability for how public funds are used.
FHUSD school board candidate Lillian Acker was born in Argentina and moved to Chicago with her parents. She has been active in the field of education, including teaching at the elementary, middle and high school levels.
Most of Acker’s career has centered on teaching English as a second language. While residing in Ohio, Acker served as president of the Ohio Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and chaired the state conference for several years. She and her husband have lived in Fountain Hills for nine years.
Julie Gunnigle, who is running for Maricopa County prosecutor as a Democrat, is a native Arizonan who is a former law professor, solo practitioner and former prosecutor.
Gunnigle said she works tirelessly to bring justice to the most vulnerable members of the community, including child victims of sexual abuse, elderly people abused in nursing homes and women fleeing domestic violence. She said she was coming forward to protect the rights of all members of the community and put an end to corruption and inefficiency in the office for decades.
