Helen Higgins, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis, has applied to run for the Democratic primary for the seat of Benton County Commissioner held by Pat Malone.

Malone, a Philomath arborist who was elected in a five-candidate race in 2018, has already signaled his intention to run for a second four-year term. The seats on the committee are staggered, with Commissioners Xan Augerot and Nancy Wyse not eligible for re-election until 2024.

“I want to serve as the Benton County Commissioner because I understand how important it is to be at the table in a capacity where I can influence policy and direct resources to achieve these priorities,” Higgins said. . “I love Benton County and care deeply about the health and sustainability of our diverse communities. This is the time and place I can put my skills and energy to work.

Higgins has also served on the Corvallis School District School Board and has championed youth dental and mental health issues, job skills, and financial literacy in his work with the Boys & Girls Club.

“My background shows that I am a person who gets things done to solve complex problems,” Higgins said.

Some of the topics she hopes to focus on include housing, helping businesses find employees, climate change, finding the right site for the county planning justice center, and ensuring the county makes the best use of funds. Federal American Rescue Plan Act, she said.
