The club has been a strong athletic club in the Elsburg community for over 60 years, having opened in 1955.

The club is located in Mare Street and has always aimed to hone and nurture young wrestling talent despite the challenges it faces.

Like many sports clubs, they have been affected by the Covid pandemic.

“Running the club is a team effort. We are spending out of pocket to cover some of the shortfalls.

“The club has been a beacon of hope for years in the community keeping kids off the streets. We want to keep our doors open,” coach Tobie Alberts said.

He said it was a disadvantaged club because some members could not even afford to pay fees or buy club uniforms or proper equipment.

“We have kids who are talented but don’t have the financial support. We need sponsorship to make sure these kids can reach their full potential,” Alberts said.

The club has 20 members.

He said registration to compete for the year cost R790 and R250 per tournament.

“The equipment, which includes boots and a suit, could cost up to R3,000. From October 6 to 8, the team has to travel to Cape Town for the competition and the club has no money to cover the costs.

“We have to pay for accommodation, transportation, meals, equipment and entry fees for the competition.

“These students have done well in competitions and have proven they can compete even at higher levels, but they need support,” Alberts said.
