The Bridgestone Senior Players Championship begins on July 7. Senior players like John Daly and Ernie Els are among the athletes who will compete.

Firestone Country Club hosted an event for Wilberforce University and Kentucky State University golfers prior to the tournament. Members of both teams had the chance to play on the north course and received a behind-the-scenes tour of the club.

Correy Lynn-Patton, a freshman entering Wilberforce University, said he was thrilled to be on the golf team and just soaked up the whole event.

“Just experience, just playing different courses and seeing how a game goes and just being here with great people,” he said.

Wilberforce golf coach William Ware said he didn’t get much exposure to the sport of golf as a youngster due to racial barriers.

“It was really tough because I didn’t have anyone around to talk to me about golf or show me golf at my high school,” Ware said.

Wilberforce is in Wilberforce Ohio, just outside of Dayton.
