Fundraiser for BBQ Boys and Girls Club Battle on the Bay

This year’s BBQ fundraiser helps raise funds for a new Boys and Girls Club in Aransas County.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Cooks from all over Texas were in Rockport Saturday for the 4th annual Fundraiser for BBQ Boys and Girls Club Battle on the Bay. 40 teams competed for prizes with all proceeds going to the Boys and Girls Club of Aransas County.

Competitor Jesus Garcia was more than happy to show his support for the club. “We’re all dads and we have kids, and when it felt like it was an opportunity to help out, we jumped at the chance because it was for the Boys and Girls Club. I want say, they need all the help they can get,” he said.

John Corkill is the CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Beeville. A native of Rockport, he said the area could benefit from a club like this because they don’t have one yet.

“I grew up here and I know what it’s like, and how hard it can sometimes be for kids to have a place to go and a place to belong. So that’s what really got to me. attracted to the idea of ​​starting a club here in Aransas County,” Corkhill shared.

Another contestant, Ronnie Medina, told 3NEWS: “When someone donates, it’s money that we can actually raise because we don’t have to spend that money finding someone to cook for us. .”

One of the people who donated their time and skills is local business owner Jimmy Raney. He cooked all the food people bought to help raise funds.

“We hope they open the Boys and Girls Club here and it will be good. We said when we’re up all hours of the night we say it’s all for the kids. So we’re delighted to help “said Raney.

As for the club itself, Corkill said the kids will have a chance to get their lives on the right track from the start.

“They can come in and feel like they belong and are able to learn new skills, hone the ones they have and really start to ask themselves, ‘What can I do in my life and how? can I positively influence him now?'” Corkill said. “That’s what we’re here to do.”

Event organizers said at least a dozen sponsors and donors helped volunteer and raise funds for the new Boys and Girls Club of Aransas County. Cooks like Garcia have come from San Antonio and even received donations from his brother in Galveston who is a firefighter there.

The 40 cooks were judged on Saturday afternoon to determine which barbecue was the best and the winner took home the cash prize.
