Surrey took over on 78 for five, trailing by 148 points.

Three wickets each for Ollie Sale and Josh Davey reduced the number of visitors to 150 for nine at lunchtime.

It was Somerset who came out at bat after the break.

Josh Davey caught Justin Broad through Jamie Baird with just two points on the board, and the score had reached five to one when the players ran off the pitch due to rain.

No further play was possible and the match was therefore drawn.

DAY ONE

On the opening day the draw was undisputed and Somerset struck first.

Somerset fly-half James Rew and Dylan Church got off to a strong start and the pair lifted Somerset 50 to 16th.

Rew reached his half century from 74 balls and by the time the lunch interval came the hosts were 92 without a loss.

After the break, the Somerset pair took their partnership into triple figures before Church was dismissed for 31 at 106 to one. George Bartlett, back in action after a shoulder injury he picked up ahead of Somerset’s LV=Insurance County Championship game in Hampshire last week, was the new man but became the second scalp by Amar Virdi when he was puzzled by Josh Blake for eight with the score out of 130.

Rew and Will Smeed took Somerset past 150 in the 47th and raised the stand half a century for the third wicket soon after.

Rew deservedly hit the triple figures of 158 balls, but he finally dropped just before tea for 112. His outstanding innings came from 177 balls and included 15 fours and a six.

At Somerset tea were 226 for three. The batters not eliminated were Will Smeed (51*) and Noah Davis (1*).

The statement came during the interval and in the final session of the day, Ned Leonard made an early breakthrough when, with the score on five, he beat Sheridon Gumbs for 0 in the second part of Surrey’s answer.

Josh Davey and Ollie Sale then struck to eliminate Justin Broad and Jamie Overton respectively as the visitors fell to 32 for three.
