The AHS Redbirds Hockey Club alumni game will return to East Alton on Saturday

EAST ALTON – They reassemble the old gang – on the ice.
The Alton High Redbirds Hockey Club alumni game is back. After a hiatus due to the pandemic, former Alton Flames and Alton Redbirds players will gather for a game at 3 p.m. Saturday at the East Alton Ice Arena, where many skated for the AHS club as far back as the 1970s. .
Some of the former players went on to coach the AHS team, including current coach Nick Boswell.
A contingent of former AHS skaters have signed up to help with the fundraiser, but there’s still room for more.
“We have about 26 registrants,” said Melissa Bell, one of the event organizers. “It’s a fundraiser for the club.”
Missy Seymour, another of the organizers, said proceeds from the game will help offset team costs for the upcoming season.
The alumni game, which will feature players from the 1970s as well as more recent graduates, will consist of three 15-minute periods, with “a break in between,” Seymour said.
Players will be divided into a red team and a white team.
Game time is 3-4:30 p.m., with a post-game catering blender/BBQ next to the rink.
Admission to the game and mixer is $30. Those wishing to attend the game only can do so with a $5 donation to the Alton Redbirds Hockey Club.
“We’ll have a 50/50 toss and a puck toss,” Seymour said.
The history of Alton High hockey dates back to the former Alton Flames hockey team formed in 1973 and coached by Tom Thompson. The Madison/St. The Clair High School Hockey League was formed. Later came the current league, the Mississippi Valley Club Hockey Association.
John Read, who played goalie for the Alton Flames first team, now lives in San Antonio, Texas. He will be back for Saturday’s alumni game and serve as coach for the white team.
Seymour said some players will wear their old uniform jerseys, but those who don’t will wear specially designed shirts with the old Alton Flames logo for the white team and the current Redbirds logo for the red team.
Alumni who have already registered to attend include:
