Author John Cuttriss says his book Aquarius Nightclub – Chesterfield is the perfect distraction for the harsh pandemic.
He said: “This year has been so different from any other in my long memory, being in ‘lockdown’ has made life so difficult for everyone in the world and we are seeking release. As of March, most of my time was eventually spent writing a new book on the Aquarius Night Club that I spent many years researching.
His book focuses on the bright lights and twinkling stars of the past – national and international cabaret performers made the trip to Chesterfield, including Syd and Eddie (later Little and Large), Cannon and Ball and Des O’Connor.
John said: “We still have a few that are still performing, like Colin ‘Fingers’ Henry who I recently met and saw playing on a cruise ship, Duncan Norvelle is still working despite recent illness. . They both contributed to my book, Colin wrote the “foreword” and Duncan included his memories with my help as a ghost writer.
John added: “Whittington Moor has always seen a lot of entertainment. Recently we have seen artists like Elton John, Tom Jones and Lionel Richie perform at the Chesterfield football stadium across the road. The famous Chesterfield races were held on the nearby Stand Road, the park being the scene of many annual circuses and fairs. So when plans were on the table for a nightclub, it was given a Spanish theme and a reference to the Zodiac signs that was used for the name of the disco lounge.
“The facade at night was ‘Vegas-lit’ with a ‘Totem’ water feature which was a beacon for the celebrations in Sheffield, Nottingham and as far away as Leicester.
“They were assured of a good evening of entertainment in lavish surroundings to enjoy the hospitality of good food and good wine with a floor show and dancing.”
The book is now available, priced at £ 19.95.
