PARSIPPANY — On Friday, February 11, the Woman’s Club of Parsippany-Troy Hills (WCPTH) held its Sixth Annual Spelling Bee after a year of hiatus due to COVID.

Twenty-four fifth-grade students representing all ten public elementary schools in Parsippany participated in the Spelling Bee, held in the auditorium of Parsippany Hills High School (PHHS).

More than 125 parents, family members and friends watched as the students approached the microphone to spell out each word. The judges for the event were Dr. Matthew Thompson, principal of Parsippany Hills High School, Melissa Kuzma, director of the Parsippany-Troy Hills Public Library System, and William Westhoven, reporter for the Gannett NJ Daily Record.

Mary Ann Coyne, WCPTH Club Member and Chair of the Sixth Annual Spelling Bee, was the moderator and club member Marianne Burke was the speaker. After 16 hard-fought rounds, a winner has been declared. The winning word was “newspaper”.

Vidyut Srinivas Santhanakrishnan from Mount Tabor Primary School won first place. Second place was won by Sristi Vaidya from Northvail Primary School. Saumyaa Patel from Eastlake Primary School came third.

The three winners are invited to participate in the New Jersey State Federated Women’s Club (NJSFWC) Highland District Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 19 in Rockaway. District winners will then be invited to the State Championship at the headquarters of the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs of the GFWC (NJSFWC) on Saturday, April 9 in New Brunswick.
